LightWash® Headlamp Cleaning System
High Pressure Air Assisted Headlight Washers
Background: Night vision - maintaining headlamp output is extremely important during inclement weather, freeze thaw periods and on sanded roads et al. You have to be there and the conditions just are not cooperating.
Even relative small amounts of road slurry build up on a lamp can reduce its output by 50 percent and more. Moreover, during snow/icing/fog conditions this defused stray light dramatically increases light above horizontal causing the fog/snow at the driver’s eye level to be illuminated, thereby further impeding forward vision.
During many storms this creates a real safety dilemma, the packed/coated headlamps become totally ineffective and the driver knows they must be cleared immediately, but visibility is so bad there is no safe place to stop. They continue on driving slower and slower hoping no one rear ends them until they can find that safe place to clear the lights.
This phenomena is well known and in northern Europe positive headlamp cleaning systems are now required by law. We have many areas here where conditions are even worse than theirs, classic example is passes in the Western states such as Donner Pass et al.
Solution: LightWash™ Systems by Commercial Vehicle Systems (formerly Sprague)
There are 3 types of systems: 1. headlamp wipers, 2. hydraulic pressure wash and 3. the system we are proposing, high-pressure air assisted washers.
1. Headlamp wipers are susceptible to mechanical failure, blade replacement, ice build up making them ineffective when needed most, and the wiper action combined with road debris has been known to damage the headlamp lens.
2. Hydraulic pressure wash systems rely on high-pressure fluid pumps using the washer fluid to clean the lamps. These systems are only effective for relative small surface areas and consume large quantities of fluid.
3. LightWash™ - High-pressure air assisted washers relying on compressed air as the primary cleaning agent, using the washer fluid as a cleaning agent only when needed. These driver, via a momentary-on panel switch in the cab, can chose air only to clear snow build up or air/fluid for road slurry and ice. Few moving parts, low maintenance, better cleaning ability for larger areas with low fluid consumption.
The LightWash™ system can be installed on any vehicle. For those without air, we have a small, easy to install, commercial duty auxiliary air kit.
There are 4 primary configurations: Standard - using the stock reservoir washer pump with the LightWash® system wired to activate in conjunction with the windsheild washers. Standard (modified-preferred) - for SUV's and vehicles with rear wiper washers using the rear systems pump and circuit to activate the LightWash®. Option 1: Momentary on-off dash mounted switch using auxiliary pump with pick up tube inserted in to stock reservoir. Option 2: Separate system with its own switch, reservoir and pump.
Note: Vehicles with oversized single headlamps should consider a quad system with two nozzles per light for optimum performance.
